Randomly sewn small stitches, useful for applique to hold down patches of fabric in a decorative way.
B A C K S T I T C H
Begin with one single straight stitch, about 5mm in length, then on the reverse side, go forward 5mm and bring the needle back up. Fill the gap by taking the needle back down where the previous stitch ended, and repeat.
B L A N K E T S T I T C H
Bring the needle through the fabric 1cm in from the edge. As you pull the thread towards you pass it over itself to create a loop and gently pull tighter. Blanket stitch is useful for binding cut edges to stop fraying.
S E E D I N G
Small randomly placed straight stitches, usually no bigger than 3mm in size.
F R E N C H K N O T S
Twist the thread around the needle and hold the thread taut. Insert the needle close to where it first emerged and pull through to anchor the knot.
The more twists, the bigger the knot.
F L Y S T I T C H
Sew a straight stich, around 1cm long but leave it slightly loose, bring the needle back up centrally, but lower down and sew a vertical stitch to create the 'Y' shape.
